Volcanoes National Park

The Mountain Gorilla Park Covers about 1,500 hectares in northwestern Rwanda, bordering Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and DRC’s Virunga National Park. Together, these form the greater Virunga Conservation Area.

Covering Rwanda’s portion of the Virunga volcanoes- Protects the upper slopes (up to 2,400 m) of six dormant volcanoes in the Virunga range, including highest point Mount Karisimbi at 4507 m, and the two active ones, mount Nyiragongo and Mount Nyamuragira

Lower slopes have dense montane forest and bamboo—the primary habitat of mountain gorillas. Volcanoes boast almost 165 bird species with 17 endemics to the region. Higher altitudes-Moorland dotted with giant lobelia, groundsel, and heath.

Heavy rainfall (2,000 mm annually), frequent mist, and occasional snow at the highest peaks.

The park is world-famous for gorilla trekking. Several habituated groups can be visited, but permits are limited (groups of 8) and costly to ensure conservation.
