600,000 ha, west of Goma, is home to eastern lowland gorillas, which are larger than mountain gorillas, with shorter hair and long arms, Gorilla treks leave from Tshivanga, 31 km northwest of the town of Bukavu, the park has montane forest, bamboo thickets and alpine heathland culminating on mount Kahuzi at 3,308 m. The western sector near Irangi (2600’/800 m elevation has lowland forest that gets 76” (1900 mm) of annual rain, chiefly between September and May. This leads to Africa’s Trails for Every Explorer

Other wildlife includes the owl-faced monkey, both black and white colobus monkeys, duikers, chimpanzees and forest birds including the rare African green broadbill. The trails offer breathtaking opportunities for seasoned photographers. This park can be visited after exploring Virunga National Park- The World Heritage Site
