 Akagera National Park: Rwanda’s Big Five Safari Destination

Located in northeastern Rwanda, along the border with Tanzania, Akagera National Park spans 312,000 hectares (770,600 acres) of diverse landscapes — from rolling savannahs and acacia woodlands to vast wetlands and shimmering lakes. Named after the Akagera River, which flows along its eastern boundary, the park is a haven for wildlife and one of the best places in East Africa to see the Big Five in a single day.

 Wildlife & Game Drives

Akagera is home to over 50 mammal species, including: Elephants, Lions, Leopards, Black Rhinos, and Buffalos (the Big Five), Roan Antelope, Elands, Topis, Bushbucks, Impalas, Zebras, Hippos, Crocodiles, and the elusive Sitatunga antelope

Day Game Drives offer excellent chances to spot large herds and predators across the park’s grasslands and woodlands. Night Game Drives reveal a different world — with sightings of leopards, hyenas, civets, serval cats, bush babies, and nocturnal birds. These drives last about 2 hours and are a thrilling way to experience the park after dark.

 Birding Expeditions

With over 520 bird species, Akagera is a paradise for birders; Savannah, wetland, and forest birds, Migratory species along the Eastern Palearctic route, Rare and sought-after species like the Shoebill Stork and Papyrus Gonolek

Boat Safaris on Lake Ihema

Cruise the calm waters of Lake Ihema, Akagera’s largest lake, for up-close encounters with; Hippos, Crocodiles, and Elephants on the shoreline. A variety of water birds, including the Shoebill, African Fish Eagle, and Cormorants. Stunning views of cultivated hills and the park’s lush scenery. Boat safaris are available in the early afternoon and evening, with optional canoeing for a more intimate experience.

 

 Fishing at Lake Shakani
