Akagera National Park-Rwanda’s Eastern Jewel of Conservation Where Adventure Meets Abundance

A Couple of Unforgettable Wildlife Encounter.

Nestled along Rwanda’s eastern frontier with Tanzania, Akagera National Park spans 1,122 km² of breathtaking landscapes—where savannah, montane, and swamp habitats converge to create one of East Africa’s most diverse ecosystems. Named after the Kagera River, which feeds into Lake Ihema and a chain of smaller lakes, Akagera is a lifeline for wildlife and a sanctuary for nature lovers.

In its early decades, Akagera was famously home to a thriving population of African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus). So numerous were these elusive predators that the park earned the nickname “Parc aux Lycaons.” Ironically, their abundance led colonial authorities to label them a pest species, a reflection of outdated ecological attitudes that undervalued predator roles in healthy ecosystems.

Over time, habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and disease led to the local extinction of wild dogs, mirroring broader conservation challenges across Africa.

With its Uniqueness –Akagera is the only protected area in East Africa where visitors can encounter the Big Five—animals that rules in savannah parks. Its mosaic of wetlands and woodlands supports a rich variety of flora and fauna, making it a prime destination for birding, game drives, and ecological research. The park is home of 179 butterfly species—including four newly recorded—and nearly 500 bird species including the migratory birds establishing it as a premier ornithological destination in East Africa.

In July 2015, Tembe Elephant Park in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, donated two male lions to Akagera. This milestone was hailed by African Parks as “a ground-breaking conservation effort for both the park and the country.” Since then, the lion population has flourished—growing to 58 individuals—symbolizing the park’s resilience and the power of collaborative conservation

In 2024, tourism contributed a remarkable 97% of Akagera’s annual revenue, with Rwandans making up 45% of visitors. This strong domestic engagement reflects growing national pride and accessibility.
