Kwita Izina -Baby Gorilla Naming Ceremony-Rwanda’s Sustainable Conservation Success
Experience one of the world’s most important celebrations of nature and meet Rwanda’s newborn baby gorillas
Kwita Izina, is a powerful fusion of tradition, conservation, and community pride.
In the 1970s, park rangers in the Virunga Massif began quietly identifying, naming and monitoring individual mountain gorillas—a practical effort to understand and protect these elusive creatures. Little did they know, those humble beginnings would one day blossom into Kwita Izina, a global celebration of wildlife protection and cultural pride.

In 2005, the Rwandan government formalized this practice, transforming it into a national event that blends conservation science with cultural heritage. Inspired by the age-old Rwandan tradition of naming newborns, Kwita Izina symbolizes care, responsibility, and a deep sense of belonging.
Each year, the ceremony brings closer the conservationists, community members, global leaders, and nature lovers to name baby gorillas born in Volcanoes National Park-Kinigi. It is here—on the misty slopes of the Virunga Massif—that Rwanda’s vibrant culture meets the gentle giants of the forest. Through music, dance, storytelling, and shared purpose, Kwita Izina honors not only the gorillas but also the people who protect them.
This is more than a naming ceremony. It is a declaration of hope, a tribute to resilience, and a reminder that when tradition and conservation walk hand in hand, the future is bright for both people and wildlife.
Kwita Izina is more than a celebration of Rwanda’s mountain gorillas
It is the deepest honor to the communities who stay in harmony with them. Each year, the ceremony becomes a moment of gratitude, honoring the guardians of Volcanoes National Park whose daily lives intertwine with the rhythms of the forest.
The Quiet Champions of Conservation
In the shadow of Volcanoes National Park, where mist dances through bamboo forests and gorillas roam free, live the quiet champions of conservation. These communities—rooted in tradition, resilience, and harmony—share their land with wildlife and their wisdom with the world.
They nurture eco-friendly practices, protect fragile ecosystems, and welcome travelers with open hearts. Through revenue-sharing programs, education, and employment, they have become stewards of a living legacy—proof that when people and nature thrive together, conservation is not just a goal, but a way of life.
Kwita Izina honors this bond. It is a ceremony not only of names, but of gratitude—for the mothers who teach, the rangers who protect, the farmers who coexist, and the children who dream of a future where gorillas and humans flourish side by side.
By naming baby gorillas in the presence of these communities, Rwanda sustains its promise of shared responsibility. It is a gesture of hope—a declaration that the future belongs to both gorillas and the people who protect them. In this union of tradition and purpose, Kwita Izina becomes a beacon of harmony, resilience, and renewal.
