80% of the forest is dominated by mature stands of Macaranga kilimandscharia and Hagenia abyssinica — species known for their ecological stability and cultural significance, native to the high-elevation Afromontane regions of central and eastern Africa.

20% is covered by high-quality mountain bamboo (Yushania Alpina), a keystone species supporting rare wildlife and sustainable community use

Bamboo Forests-Life and LivelihoodEmpowering Communities Through Bamboo Craftsmanship

Echuya’s dense bamboo zones are ecological powerhouses-They provide habitat for rare and specialized species-they support local communities through sustainable harvesting and craft-making.

In Kisoro and other parts of southwestern Uganda, local communities sustainably harvest small bamboo species to create a variety of handcrafted items—baskets, lamp holders, mats, and more. These crafts are not only functional and artistic, but they also serve as a bridge between tradition and eco-tourism.

By engaging in bamboo weaving and other artisanal skills, community members—especially women and youth—gain economic opportunities while preserving cultural heritage.
