Deep within the mist‑covered forests of southwestern Uganda lie two extraordinary conservation areas — Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. These UNESCO‑protected sanctuaries are the beating heart of gorilla conservation and the only places in Uganda where visitors can fulfill the dream of tracking mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Across the border, the Virunga region extends into Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, forming a transboundary ecosystem that shelters the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population.

Bwindi Heritage Site- The Ultimate Gorilla Tracking Experience
Tracking time varies depending on where the gorillas nested the previous evening. These gentle giants roam freely through the forest, feeding and playing as they move from range to range — especially during the rainy season when vegetation is lush. A trek may take 3–4 hours one day and up to 6 hours another, depending on their movement and feeding patterns.
Each morning, a team of expert trackers sets out to locate the families, ensuring both visitor safety and species protection. Their monitoring provides precise starting points for the day’s adventure.
Conservation and Collaboration.
In the past, some gorilla families such as the Rushegura group occasionally crossed into the Democratic Republic of Congo. Thanks to ongoing transboundary collaboration, these families have been successfully guided back into Bwindi’s forest, strengthening Uganda’s conservation efforts.
